Steller's Eider
Polysticta stelleri

This beautiful Steller's Eider is actually a third calendar year male. It does not show any traces of immaturity, but the age is known because the same bird wintered as a first winter last year. It was photographed at Brusand in Rogaland county (western Norway) 9 March 2004. It was aggressive towards the larger Common Eiders Somateria mollissima males nearby, and courted their females.

Picture of a first-summer male together with a King Eider can be seen here.
