Larus sp.
Fourth or fifth calendar-year
February 4th. 2004
Nidarø, Trondheim, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway

This dark-eyed subadult gull is superficially similar to a Caspian Gull. But there is something wrong about the general appearance; it shows a (too) short primary projection, short tibia, and abberrant streaking in the head. However, black pigments on tertials, a small white mirror on p10 and bill proportions fits Caspian. It was a small gull, slightly smaller than the average Scandinavian Herring Gull, thereby indicating a female. It has been proposed that it might be a hybrid with Caspian involved. Comments are appreciated.
