Infected Larus canus
Juvenile
18 August 2004
Sandvin, Odda, Hordaland, Norway

A comment from Kjell Handeland at the National Veterinary Institute in Norway: These tumour- or wartlike structures are probably injuries caused by a smallpox virus. Smallpox in birds is not very rare (at least in Norway). These injuries are most often seen at the bare parts of the bird: base of the bill, eyes and feet. The diagnosis may be confirmed through histological tests.
