Larus canus canus
Adult winter
February 1st. 2002
Store Lungegårdsvann, Bergen, Hordaland, Norway

This neat and fluffed-up adult Common Gull has a small and quite rounded mirror on p10, both the fluffy feathering on the back and scapulars and the small mirror are features often associated with Ring-billed Gull. Notice, however, the broad white fringes/tips to the longest scapulars and the longest tertials - these are much narrower on adult Ring-billed Gull. Many adult Common Gulls have a well-marked dark ring around the bill in the same place as an adult Ring-billed Gull, but the Common Gulls normally have the dark less evenly distributed over both mandibles such as this bird.
